Friday Night Notebook

Here's a quick look and commentary on some of Tonight's games around MoCo and the IHC:

Randolph (2-5) at Morris Knolls (5-2):

Knolls is a better team than their record suggests, while I think Randolph is worse than their record suggests. Look for them to open a can of whoop ass on the Rams.

Golden Iggles, 28-14.

Immaculate Conception (0-6) at Boonton (3-4) :

When did Boonton decide NOT to cancel their football program? Oops sorry, did I say that out loud?

The Bombers: 21-7.

HP (4-3) at Parsippany (0-7):

The Hornets are coming off of an extremely hard fought win versus WEssex. While Pars-nip-pany on the other hand is still trying to crack the code on what the H-E-dubblehockeystix they need to do to get a W in this league. Here's a suggestion: try renovating your football field so that when it rains you aren't swimming.

And another thing...and I am sorry for sidetracking, but this has to be said.

WHY IN THE HADES DID PARS-nIP-PANNY RENAME THEIR TEAMS THE RED HAWKS???

When I played it was the "Redskins".

First of all that (Red Hawks) is kind of a stupid name.

Secondly, AIM is a bunch of losers. If you go to their website, take a look at their commentary section...most American Indians hate this sports team renaming effort and are EMBARR-ASSED by this organization, and they are right there telling them so.

Third, how did this go unnoticed by the MoCo press corps?? Hoffman, if you are reading this, please tell me you gave them a rash of shite over it, and my dumbass just missed it.

Fourth, the one lawsuit that was actually filed on all of this renaming nonsense was on the behalf of the University of North Dakota AGAINST the NCAA. I haven't checked the status of it lately but the UND "Fighting Sioux" had a very strong case. Parsippany AD and Super, message for you: Just because the NCAA is a bunch of spineless, politically correct nit-wits, does not mean you have to follow suit. For Pete's sake, HOW MANY INDIANS LIVE IN NJ?? You know, I don't see D.C. renaming their NFL team anytime soon, and they certainly have one whole heckuva lot more visibility.

To the Parsnippany AD and Super at the time of the change: You are either hyper-sensitive (read: ruled by emotions), or cowardly. Either way this is no precedent to set for your athletics teams...but then, I have a feeling you figured they were already in the toilet, so why does it matter? Some things never change.

The Pick: Look for HP to be playing their 2nd and 3rd string early (if the rain doesn't slow things down). Hornets, 28-7.

Morristown (6-1) at Livingston (5-2).

I think Livingston has a chance for an upset here. Morristown is fast, but Livingston is smart (oops, did I say that out loud too??). Well, anyway, it should be close, but I give the edge to Morristown cause I want them to move up in the Seedings for North 2, Group III.

Colonials, 21-20.

Columbia (0-7) at West Morris (0-7).

AKA the "Toilet Bowl II".

Hey, somebody's gotta win right? Well, I think West Morris is actually better than their record would lead one to believe (they have actually dropped some close ones), despite the fact (word has it) that their entire Senior class walked off the team last season. (No, I am NOT letting that one go). They have a talent pool that should be having them at 6-1. You do the math.

They lost an RB/LB Captain (Saum) in the Knolls game to a head injury, who just returned from MMH this week. One of their best players is Tyler Dannenbaum who makes things happen on special teams.

Meanwhile, Columbia has allowed opposing teams' JV squads more time towards that coveted Varsity letter than any other team in the Iron. These guys are a favorite among 2nd and 3rd stringers at Knolls, East Orange, and Morristown (combined totals of those games? 130-6. Yeah, I needed a calculator.). If I were the AD at Columbia, I would ...never mind.

Look for the F I mean Highlanders I mean Wolf-pack to pick up their first W here, vent some angst and win one for Saum.

WMC, 21-14.

Parsippany Hills (5-2) at West Essex (6-1)

Par Hills -

- Pissed off cause they lost a heart breaker to Mendham, 15-14 (in case you live in a vacuum).

- Starting QB Scialampo out for season...very decent backup in DePugh.

- Playoff insurance/survival on the line.

WE-

- Pissed off cause they lost a nail biter to HP, 7-6 (in case you are a soccer player).

- Starting RB/LB Hayek out 3-4 weeks.

- #1 Seed on the line. IHC-Hills championship probably in jeopardy.

This is a close call, but if Par Hills' coach doesn't get tossed for arguing with the zebras (who you know WE alumni will at least try to pay off before the game - which doesn't work against HP by the way - too many Italians on both sides) for making "unfair" calls, I think the Vikings have a chance. Plus, I would like to see WE go down [again]. Look for PH RB Fowler to have a great game.

Vikings, 21-17.

---UPDATE---
You can read the latest on this ongoing saga of the DOPEY AIM agenda here.

And, for the record, I am not opposed to the movement of removing the name "Redskins" specifically from a list of available sports monikers, as it is, very mildly IMHO, offensive.

HOWEVER -removing the name from teams who have 1) no intent of disparaging their players or anyone else, and 2) changing the name of your team you have had for many years to satisfy the WHINING of the very few, is an entirely different story.

Pars-n-ippany could have picked about 2000 better names...just "Hawks" for that matter would have been better.

BTW- My wife is part Lenape, and of course so are my children. So, I don't want to hear any dopey comments about how I am bigoted...'cause I am obviously not. 'Nuff Said.

Val Hall...great commentary and recap. Only a fellow Itailian could get away with line about paying off the zebras. I am jealous that I cannot joke about that, even though I grew up in guido heaven. I never learned, I still call "gravy" "tomato sauce".

I would like to see WMC get a moral victory after the year they had. I know some seniors who didn't this year bc of some issues they had with the program. But personally I feel they have a good coach(s), from what I have heard at least.

I was also dishartened to see that Parsippany is not the Red Skins anymore. The Red Skins just sounds badass. The Red Hawks sounds, and forgive me for this, a bit on the fairy side.

On that same note, it was good to see Booton keep their name...and also be in a league that fits their school size. HP used to play them and they were the only guys getting Bombs on them.

I really think Par Hills can come out victorious today. Although Hayek will not be that missed on Offense (because I think they have depth), he will definately be missed on D. He is too much of a factor. And of course, both MoHills and Mendham need that to happen to win the conference.

I give WMC a lot of shite: A) because I am a Mendham Alum (huge rivals), and B) because I actually think it was totally unsat for those kids to have been left out in the dark last year by the program such that they felt they had to walk.

Boonton...I'm glad they kept their name. It suits them well. Saw a couple of years ago that they actaually posted a few competitive teams.

Parsippany...that school board did them no good at all with that sissy renaming business. lordalmighty. If they weren't a public school I would think they might end up in the same boat as Bayley-Ellard. But hey, when you are at the public trough, keep on feeding. What's the #1 rule of any government job?? Don't kill the job! So, that is why they still compete at athletics I guess. It is real clear their Administration could care less about their performance on the athletic field.

The Coach said...

Wow – do you also right for “Jim Rome is burning?” No seriously, do you? 

Getting back to the past:

1) I never, in my life thought I’d see a day when WMC was OH-for after the halfway point. People in MoCO love to hate West Morris Football.
2) Add to that, throw in Randolph being sub-500 in the same year!? What next Mtn Lakes not winning 7 games in the CHC?
3) Hate to break it to you but if you take a poll on rivals that MoCo HS fans hate I think it would be like this: (1) WMC, (2) Mendham (3) Randolph – as for me, I grew out of that and now I love everyone! Ok, not true, but I will always support the kids and only get annoyed by parents in the stands who talk and proving how little they actually know.
4) The RedHawks thing – ancient history. Do you remember St. John’s old mascot? They got a new one the same time Parsippany did. Which was the same time I was at Montclair State College – yes that as the name – and we changed too … to the red Hawks! Argg!

The Coach said...

oops - I forgot ... who is this Baylee Ellard you speak of? Wasn't that the old Mountain High School?

just kidding, I know both!

HP domintates this weekend. Parsippany's woes will continue for another week.

Go Hornets! I heard that several angry bees were protesting Hanover Park's name because the term "hornet" is like calling a bee the "n" word.

Unruly, aren't you covering this press conference for the Observer?

Arnie Shaw said...

Fakehead, your Hornets (sorry, Af-bee Americans) will dominate this weekend. They are the Rockies of the IHC right now. They are hot...like honey.

As for Bayley...they had a coolest uniforms in the County...Purple and Gold.

Val Halla said...

Dude - BE did have the coolest unis, and it is STILL upsetting to me that they folded and the Delby douches still run around thinking they own the state athletic scene...not that BE was any competition to them in that regard, but still, it was nice to have a Catholic school nearby where the kids, faculty, and alumni weren't entirely full of themselves.

COACH- Yeah I feel the same way...throw this in too to just illustrate even more how the landscape has changed...

Hopatcong wins football games
Boonton wins football games
Bernards had a winnng football team 2 and 3 years ago.

Next thing you know Manville might win a few too. Or has that already happened and I missed it? Damn. I'm getting old.

What's that sound? Oh, it is Satan getting an icicle on his nose and beating up some poor old lady and taking her mink coat. Damn, must be getting cold down there!

I can see how people have begung to hate Mendham...3 losing seasons in like 20 years. That happens when you win so much...like the Pats today and the niners and Cowboys of the 80s and 90s. It is also why people hate Wessex too I think...you accidentally left them off your list. I think there are definitely more hated teams in the iron Div anyway...Randolph, Motown, SHP.

I am not serious either but its still fun as hell...kinda like ribbing your buddies. But - I know what you mean abou the parents thing...total BS...but fun to egg them on still! Just try not to get swung on!

Speaking of rivalries, hows the history on the Dover-MoHills shite since you never play Knolls anymore? I remember back in fall O '92 when we opened a can of whoop ass on the Scarlet-Knights-on-the-windy-hill alma mater of yours, after the game the Dover players were all stoked and high fiving us at our bus. Whatever.

Speaking of Mascots, you all should have taken it to WEssex for using the same mascot as you in the same Division. That's retarded. I know it is old blood, but who was here first?? waaaaaaaa!!! Your AD's could have had Jelly wrestled over it. The loser would have had to name their team the "Scarlet Tampons".

your wife is part lenape? that's interesting, my wife is part sparta. small world

The Coach said...

1) "your wife is part lenape? that's interesting, my wife is part sparta. small world" - I never, EVER knew Joe was that funny!

2) Ben "Sinatra" Guyre is announcing Saturday. Looks like I am in a for a long day. At least I'll be dry!

3) How bad did West Essex shove it in our faces?

4) Dover-Mo Hills was a great! What made it great was Pee-wee football. Mine Hill kids go to dover and we (I was a mine hill kid at the time) gave dover half of their stud athletes. When we played as kids, it was always a battle. Dover was always stacked. then HS, It turned.

I think there are two Mine Hill kids on Dover now. And the youth program, probably one or two and I think he's a Betz.

Apparently Mine Hill is not for the athletes anymore! Wait till I am on the BOE!!

Val Halla said...

Joe- uhhhh....serioulsy that was funny! No, seriously. My cousin is a Jefferson cop...I think that makes our kids like 4th cousins or something. No it is a small world. Well, at least our cats could be related...is yours Siamese too?

BTW Joe...sorry I was - uhhh occupied at the time (or at least unavoidably detained). Did you ever give Parsippany grief over changing their name?

COACH- Cmon. I've seen Mo Hills beat WEssex before...Joe and I BOTH thought they'd do it this year. What happened?? Ahh...old news.

The Coach said...

Wessex pounded Par Hills. Did anyone pick West Essex minus Hayek?

Val Halla said...

Don't think so...but I never checked the ledger...but I DID notice all of my other picks were correct! {grin}

How'd you do?

Val Halla said...

COACH - BTW, I meant to ask you, is Luke Mirabella the son of the MLB ball player from Parsnippany '73?

Arnie Shaw said...

Hey Hasselhoff, I mean Hoffman, picked Mendham to win. Either we at this blog are influencing him or he is starting to soften up about Mendham.

Arnie Shaw said...

I hope they play in the mud today.

Val Halla said...

from the lam-as-hell we cover no one but group4 teams well, ledger: " Morris Hills (6-1) at Mendham (6-1): (Tomorrow) In this clash of first-place teams in the Iron Hills Conference-Hills Division, Morris Hills will look to linebacker Bill Goble and defensive end Drew Ledet. Mendham's defense is fortified by linebacker Pete Mindnich and cornerback Nick Cutalo.

Morris Hills, 21-13"

pathetic
